AP Source: Lohan wants to end necklace theft case

AP, LOS ANGELES, April 1: Lindsay Lohan wants to enter a no contest plea to end a criminal case filed over a $2,500 necklace reported stolen, a source close to the actress said Saturday.

The source, who is familiar with Lohan's criminal case but was not authorized to comment publicly, said the actress wants to put the case behind her so she can focus on her career.

No court date has been set for Lohan to enter the plea. She is scheduled to return to a Los Angeles court for a pretrial hearing May 11, but the actress is hoping to resolve the case before then, the source said.

By pleading no contest, Lohan would not be admitting guilt, and it was not immediately clear if she would face any additional penalties. The actress already has been sentenced to four months in jail for a probation violation related to the theft case. She is free on bail.

Prosecutors in February charged Lohan with felony grand theft on allegations that she took the necklace from Kamofie & Co., a jewelry store near the actress's home in Los Angeles' Venice neighborhood. The charge was reduced last week by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner.

Authorities allege the theft occurred roughly three weeks after Lohan, 24, was released from court-ordered rehab at the Betty Ford Center.

Lohan's assistant turned the necklace in to authorities after police obtained a search warrant to retrieve it from Lohan's house, but before detectives were able to conduct the search.

Sautner said during an April 22 hearing that she thought Lohan's actions were brazen, but that she did not think the case warranted a felony prosecution because many other cases involving more serious allegations are reduced to misdemeanors.

Deputy District Attorney Danette Meyers said she thought the ruling was an "abuse of discretion" and her office may appeal it, but no challenge has yet been filed.

A little over a week ago, Sautner sentenced Lohan to 120 days in jail and nearly 500 hours of community service for violating the terms of her probation by taking the necklace. Lohan was on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case.

She was released to pursue an appeal but has not yet filed a formal motion to try to get the sentence reduced.

In all likelihood, Lohan would serve a small fraction of her four-month sentence — possibly as little as three weeks — due to jail overcrowding.

The source said Lohan's intention to plead no contest was aimed at making good on her statement to Jay Leno earlier this week that she wanted to take responsibility for her actions.

The plea was first reported Saturday by celebrity website TMZ.

The actress's career has been mostly stalled for the past year as she struggled to deal with the terms of her sentence in the drunken driving case. She recently accepted a two-picture deal to appear in a pair of mob films, including a biopic of the infamous Gotti family. She will portray the wife of John Gotti Jr. in the film "Gotti: Three Generations" that also stars John Travolta and Joe Pesci.

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Lohan said she hopes the role will help her return to being known more as an actress than a tabloid mainstay.

"I'm really excited to be back on set and clear up all the misinterpretations about me and show this is what I love to do," Lohan said about her new roles.

Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon parents of twins

AP, NEW YORK, April 1: Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon celebrated their third anniversary with another milestone — becoming parents to a baby girl and boy.

Carey's representative, Cindi Berger, confirmed the births to The Associated Press. The singing superstar gave birth Saturday at 12:07 p.m. EDT at an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles. Berger says the baby girl was born first, weighing 5 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 18 inches long; her brother was next, at 5 pounds 6 ounces, and was 19 inches.

Berger says the couple has not named the children yet. Cannon drove Carey to the hospital in their Rolls-Royce Phantom. Berger said the 41-year-old Carey, who had gone through false labor, was calm, thinking that it was another false alarm.

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old Cannon was so nervous he went to the wrong department at the hospital, and was guided to the maternity ward by a nurse.

"It was like right out of an 'I Love Lucy' skit," said Berger.

Berger says they were listening to Carey's "We Belong Together" after the children were born.

The couple are expected to renew their wedding vows on Sunday. The pair got married in 2007 after a whirlwind romance. They were the subject of endless baby rumors, and the couple actually were expecting shortly after their marriage, but Carey had a miscarriage; they did not reveal the miscarriage until she announced her pregnancy last fall.

Mariah Carey gives birth to twins on wedding anniversary

Reuters, LOS ANGELES, April 1: Singer Mariah Carey on Saturday gave birth to twins, delivering a boy and a girl on the third anniversary of her wedding to Nick Cannon, her spokeswoman said.

The babies were born shortly after 9 a.m. local time at a Los Angeles hospital, said Carey's representative, Cindi Berger.

Berger said the babies weigh over 5 pounds each, and the girl is 18 inches long while the boy is 19 inches. The names of the children were not immediately known.

Grammy winning singer Carey and Cannon, an actor and rapper, were married on April 30, 2008.

"Babies were born on their wedding anniversary," Berger said in a statement. "Not even Mariah could plan that!"

Carey announced she was pregnant in October. At the time, Cannon said the couple delayed telling people about the pregnancy because Carey once suffered a miscarriage.

Diana funeral topped royal wedding in U.S. ratings

Reuters, LOS ANGELES, April 1: Almost 23 million American TV viewers tuned in to watch live coverage of Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton on Friday despite the wedding taking place before dawn in much of the United States.

But according to Nielsen ratings data released on Saturday, U.S. TV viewing interest in the British royal nuptials in London was far below that of Princess Diana's funeral in 1997.

Nielsen said 22.7 million Americans watched live coverage of the royal wedding on 11 U.S. networks. The U.S. population is about 310 million people.

In comparison, 33.2 million tuned in to watch the funeral of Princess Diana in London in September 1997. Diana, the mother of Prince William, was killed in car crash at the age of 36.

The Nielsen figures did not cover the millions more who watched Friday's wedding ceremony on smaller U.S. networks, nor online, where interest in the couple has rivaled coverage of superstar movie actresses and pop singers in recent months.

E! Online alone reported a record 23.6 million page views on Friday thanks mostly to its coverage of the London nuptials and live streaming of the royal wedding ceremony.

Worldwide, other estimates put the global television and online audience for the wedding at 2.4 billion people -- more than one in three of the global population if the figure is accurate.
