Nipah kills another in Rangpur


Nipah encephalitis claimed one more life in Rangpur of Bangladesh early on Monday, taking the death toll to 25 from the disease over the last few days.
Moyez Uddin, 45, of Annodanagar in Pirgacha upazila, died around 5:00am at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Taufiqur Rahman, director of the hospital, told The Daily Star.
He was admitted to the hospital on Saturday after he had contracted the Nipah virus, reports our Rangpur correspondent.
In Kurigram, two people are suspected to have died from the virus on Sunday.
The deceased are: Anwarul Islam, 16, of Hemerkuthi village of Sadar upazila and a Moon, a one-year-old child of Gharial Danga union in Rajarhat upazila.
Anwarul was admitted to Kurigram Sadar Hospital with suspected Nipah virus on Sunday evening, our correspondent reports from Kurigram.
Later he was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Dr Nazrul Islam, residential medical officer (RMO) of Sadar Hospital said, “Anwarul Islam, son of Shahadat Ali was admitted with fever in the hospital at about 6:00pm on Sunday.”
“A medical team led by Civil Surgeon, referred him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital suspecting him a patient of Nipah virus,” he added.
