Khulna Divisional Committee of Patkal Sangram Parishad (PSP) has announced a five-day agitation programme from August 23 to press home its 10-point demand.
The announcement came from a rally on Wednesday afternoon at Khalishpur Sramik maidan with labour leader of Crescent Jute Mills Md Murad Hossain in the chair.
The demands include immediate submission of Wages Commission report and its implementation, appointment to casual workers at all seven state-owned jute mills of Khulna-Jessore industrial belt, payment of dearness allowances, adequate allocation of fund for buying raw materials for the jute mills, stern action against malpractices, irregularities and misappropriation of fund allocated by government.
Attended by a large number of workers of the state-owned jute mills, the rally was addressed, among others, by central Joint Secretary of Patkal Sangram Parishad and President of Khulna district unit of Workers' Party Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan.
The workers will stage sit-in in front of their respective jute mills for an hour from 9:30am on August 23 and in front of the administrative offices on August 24. Gate meetings in front of all the seven jute mills at 5:30 pm everyday until August 28.
On Sunday last, workers and employees of state-owned Khalishpur Jute Mills decided to go for agitation after Eid to press home their nine-point demand.
They took the decision at a closed-door meting held at the workers' union office with central leader of Patkal Sangram Parishad Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan in the chair.
The nine-point demand include issuance of appointment letters and identity cards for all casual workers and employees, permanent appointment of workers on the basis of seniority, Eid bonus, financial benefits for security guards, payment of salaries to employees of the mills as per national pay scale and renovation to labour colony.
